Win XP Setup CD booted ONCE on fresh install ... then....

Hi Folks,

New build Abit IP-35 Pro, SATA HDD, SATA DVD Burner, Intel DC Proc,
yada yada-

I am totally stumped by this one, I did a fresh, clean install on a
factory new 500 GB WD SATA HDD, bios set for cd-rom first boot device.
Install went fine, SATA detected HDD as IDE by the mb, did not need to
install (F6) any SATA drivers [not going to run any RAID]. Did a long
burn-in - everything stable and good. ABIT has made an awesome
board~

I wanted to set up a dual-boot install for VISTA but the the VISTA
setup dvd blinks after the "Press here to boot cd..." and then it just
boots right into XP on the HDD. I tried to boot from the XP setup disc
again and same thing - no go. Now - here's the kicker - I can boot
with Bart's PE and just about any OTHER CD/DVD boot disc. Any
thoughts?

one last item - I did use a partition manager from XP to split the
massive HD into 2 primary partitions, ya think it wrote my MBR or
something?

Sounds like maybe the keyboard isn't initializing at the point where
you strike the key. If it's a USB KB then swap it out for a PS/2 and
try again and see if that's it. If it's not a USB Kb then I would say
to re-partition the HD and try again before you load your stuff on
there.

Hi - thanks for the response JAD and pickle,

The CD boot sequence in bios is set right and I did try using a PS2
but as I suspected, that is not it. Any other bootable CD except an
OS (XP or VISTA) boots properly. I would try a Linux bootable disc
but not today, not in the mood - I will keep huntin'

Does anyone of the other CD/DVDs need keyboard input in order to
continue booting from the CD/DVD?

When you first installed XP on the new disk drive, you did not see the
"Press any key to boot from the CD" message, because the code on the
Windows XP CD did not detect any bootable hard drive, so the CD just
booted into Windows setup. However, once the Windows XP CD or Vista
DVD detects a bootable hard drive, it will always show the "Press any
key..." message, and require you to do so in order to continue booting
from the CD/DVD.

Try disconnecting the hard drive, and then boot from the XP CD and
Vista DVD.

Un-huh - with no HDD to boot into, the disc is seen!

OK, good start, but thoughts on any solution to boot VISTA and get on
with some serious dual-booting, does your hunch suggest my bios,
mbr, CD drive, or other? This does not look like normal behavior. I
checked the abit forums and someone was having problems with boot
order setup, supposedly fixed with some beta bios flash. The problem
thou - did not sound EXACTLY like mine.

From what you've said and done it sounds like a problem with the Abit BIOS.
Is there a newer BIOS version available?

I've run into this problem before ( coincidentally with an Abit mb) that I
could not get the first boot device to be the install OS disk if I had a hdd
attached that had a running OS. Finally, after a few years, Abit did issue a
BIOS version that fixed it.

Jan,

Sure enough it looks like that is the root of the problem. The SATA
burner does not get recognized in my bios by device name just "SATA
CD-ROM". There is a beta bios out there and there have been some
mentions in forums that it addresses a "booting issue". The thing that
really puzzled me is why some CDs booted and some did not? I googled
my hiney off and could not find someone having a problem quite like
mine.

Thanks for all of your replys and I think I am going to steer clear
of a "beta bios flash"; wait for the final, and consider this a
mystery solved for now.

The problem seems to be the keyboard isn't being read by the startup
code on the XP CD or Vista DVD.

With the hard drive hooked up, boot from the XP CD and as soon as you
see the "Press any key to boot from the CD" prompt, press Return on
the keyboard. If the Press any key message disappears immediately,
then the keyboard was read.

If, on the other hand, five periods are displayed following the "Press
any key" prompt before the hard drive boots, that means that the
keyboard was not read. The Bios has something about the USB keyboard
support via Bios or OS. Try changing it.
