Problem Description: I experience a fatal error and the
system requested I power down and restart windows. I did
and after powering up the system "Before" windows lunched
my pc stated that windows could not start do to a missing
or damaged file: <Windows Root>System32\nal.dll It
requested that I resinstall this file.

However, I can't get to anything to reinstall this file
which I've copied from another computer. So I decided to
do a reinstall of windows from my CD and got as far as
the Setup window which CAUTIONED me that:

A \Windows folder already exists that may contain a
Windows installation. If you continue the existing
Windows installation will be overwritten.

All files, subfolders, user accounts, applications,
security and desktop...etc...The "My Documents" folder
may also be deleted.

*To use the folder and delete the existing Windows
installation in it, press L
*To use a different folder, press ESC.
* To quit Setup, press F3

My question is this I have important email in folders in
Outlook I donot want to lose, I also have important
documents in "My Documents" and important account
information in MS money all that I don't want to lose.
Should I press L to reinstall, or ESC for another folder,
and if so will I be abl to access the latter information?
Or should I press F3 and try something else?

I tried the repair function typing c:/CHKDSK /R/A and it
run but when I restarted my pc it still came up with the
missing nal.dll message.

Help!

.You may want a second opinon before you act but if you
overwrite I belive all will be lost. You might try a
repair installiation of xp when prompted if you want a new
installation or repair you need to enter R this may get
you back your files. Like I said wait for another opion.

Boot directly to the Windows CD, and watch for the option
to do a "R"epair option - by pressing "R".

You mean hal.dll. This is the Hardware Abstraction
Layer. This file is on your XP CD. You need to run the
XP setup from the CD, choose R for repair, select the
Windows install (which will be 1., since you only have
one). If you have a password, you will need to enter it.
It will then take you to the C:\Windows DOS prompt. From
there, look for the hal.dl_ file on the XP CD. Once you
find it, use the Extract hal.dl_ C: to extract the
hall.dll into the Windows folder, then copy it to the
System32 folder. While you're at it, you may as well run
CHKDSK /R to fix any other errors that may exists. Type
EXIT to leave recovery mode and your system should boot up
correctly after that.
