Win XP Pro won't boot

Sep 2003. Win XP Pro system worked for 2 months ok. All
Windows updates and Norton 2004 anti-virus were installed
and updated on a daily basis. After a reboot last week,
the PC would boot as far as the Windows XP logo screen
and then a blue screen of death. Checked and replaced
h/w with the same results. I installed a new HD with
WinXP and Norton (fully updated) and connected the
original drive as the 2nd drive. After I ran the
antivirus s/w, it found a Trojan horse virus on the
original drive. Norton 2003 could not fix it, but it was
able to quarantine it. Re-running Norton on the original
drive showed no viruses. When original drive is
connected as the primary drive, it still has exactly the
same problem in any boot F8 mode (e.g. last known good,
safe, etc.) I am able to boot off the original Win XP CD
and go into the repair console, but I'm not sure what to
do to get the drive to boot again.

Does anyone have any ideas other than re-install Win XP?

I'm not an expert, but I had a similar problem, I
reinstalled XP AS AN UPGRADE, which will keep all your
programmes, but reinstall essential or missing files.
Hope this helps
