I have XP Pro on several machines and Win 98SE on my file
server. File access is extremely slow. How can I speed
up my file access times?
What type of network?
Is the network running at 10 mbps or 100 mbps?
How much RAM does the file server machine have? If it is going to
remain in use for some time as a file server then you should seriously
consider upgrading the RAM to at least 128 mb and perhaps more.
I recently upgraded a client's network from 10 mbps using coax cable
to 100 mbps with cat5e cabling and 10/100 mbps switches. Access
speeds have improved very substantially. A new, faster, server also
helped.
