win xp pro upgrade error

athlon 2400+, gigabyte m/b, 128M ram, win98SE (upgraded
from win95b), no anti-virus software
installed...compatibility check lists some software
issues...Juno dialer, AOL messenger...no hardware
listings...newly installed 32M TNT generic video card with
generic PCI Display driver in device mgr., halfway through
install (using retail WinXP pro Upgrade)get the following
message:

"An error has been encountered that prevents setup from
continuing. A component file does not match the
verification information present in the manifest."

(Error: sxs.dll: Syntax error in manifest or policy file-
c:\$win_nt$.~ls\I386\asm\60100MSFT\windows\common\
controls.man on line 5)

Have attempted install several times, get same error.
have cleaned up hard drive each time before each install
removing any temp dir.s previously created. any help
would be appreciated.

Marc --

That particular error message is indicative of a poor CD burn or
corrupt file image. The solution is to install Windows XP using
the original Microsoft Windows XP CD with the edge-to-edge
hologram image.
