Win XP Pro SP2

I tried to install Win XP Pro today on an HP PAvilion 6470z with a PCI USB
hub, Memorex 52X CDRW, and DLink Ethernet card. Well, it hasn't gone well at
all. I spent about 5 hours on the phone with MS tech support to no avail.
It would start loading the drivers and then freeze in the middle of the
driver loading. So I started over and made the install partion FAT instead
of NTFS. So I got through the install process. But now I can't get it to
startup without going into Safe mode ( with Network support ). I have the
slightest idea how to fix this. Any ideas?

Sounds to me like there is a possibility not all the hardware on this
machine is natively supported by Windows XP..

Especially after reading this:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&docname=bph06784&lang=en&cc=us

When looking for the Windows XP Driver Support for the model you gave.
Heck - the last BIOS update for that computer was 2 years before Windows XP
was released.

You can try again...

Unplug everything except the necessities (from inside and outside the
computer) and reinstall..
: Necessities would include..
- Motherboard/Processor/Memory
- Hard Disk Drive
- CDROM drive
- Video Card (with the monitor connected to it)
- Keyboard and Mouse

Take out any modems/network cards, PCI USB cards and unhook any external
drives/printers/etc.
Then do your clean install.

You may also want to check out what version of the BIOS you have -
although - considering what I see - it may not be worth the trouble to try
and get this up and running with Windows XP.

Have you tried pressing F8 at startup and selecting normal mode? If so, what
happens?

This doesn't sound like all that old a computer, we have XP Pro running
quite acceptably on Vectra XE310s. I would've expected it to work, albeit
slowly.

One point: check if the computer has mixed memory types installed, e.g. 100
and 133MHz SDRAM in two slots. XP has less tolerance to this than 9x. If so,
remove one and see if that clears the problem. BTW, the older HP machines
tend to be picky about RAM, not all brands/types work in them.
