it wont start the windows firewall/ICS services automaticly during bootup. I
have to got to firewall setting and if i click to see them i get this error
notice.

"Windows firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated serive
is not running. Do you want to start the windows fierwll/internet connectino
sharing (ICS) servies?"

Never had to do this before, just started doing it last night. its the
windows xp firewall. I am useing windows xp pro sp2 with all updates.

sounds like you've got another piece of software that's running with
administrative/service privs and keeps shutting down the firewall service.
unfortunately there's no real way to track back to who's doing this.

Hi Ackk, I got the same problem as you had in Dec...
Windows firewall cannot be displayed because the associated service is not
running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS) service? [Yes] [No] On clicking Yes, another alert box opens up
stating: Starting the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing service.
Then after 30 seconds, yet another alert box opens stating: Windows cannot
start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service. [OK]
I have been to the bottom Network Setup Wizard and tried setting it up that
way, and although I go through the steps and answer all the questions
correct, afterwards, when I go to Windows Firewall in Control Panel, and
click on it, I get the same as above finishing with: Windows cannot start the
Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service. [OK]
.... so obviously sonething is wrong…

Did you solve your problem? and if so - How?
can u help me?
write me at: Firewall [at] gascogneaffaires.com or here at the
microsoft.public.windowsxp.security_admin and I should get a response mail...
hope you can help

Hi

If you don't have WinXP SP2 installed, try this one:

http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

Please try this if you have SP2 for WinXP installed:

Start/Run --> cmd.exe

and then, in the command prompt that opened up, type:

netsh.exe winsock reset

and hit Enter. Follow prompts and reboot.

If that didn't work, see if registering the following DLLs helps:

From Start/Run, run the following commands:

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\atl.dll

then

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\hnetcfg.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\netshell.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\netcfgx.dll
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\netman.dll

Then do a reboot.

Thanks Ackk and for your time eh!
in fact, I found a fix via google, just after I wrote to you last night...
Article ID : 892350
It pretty much sets out the same thing for XP sp2, but comes up as a fix
after installing Ms AntiSpy Beta... Which apparently might be the cause
culprit...!

Thanx again
Lou
