Assuming your running Windows XP, place the XP CD in the drive, when the
setup screen appears, select "check system compatibility."

Open Control Panel, open System, go to the Hardware tab, click "Device
Manager," if you see any red or yellow warnings, that device likely needs to
be upgraded or the issue might be fixed with updated drivers.

Michael, how is the OP supposed to use the XP cd when he stated it will not
read any CDs or DVDs?

Asking a stranger from a newsgroup to remote into your computer is probably
not a good idea, and they wouldn't be able to check your keyboard remotely,
among other things.

You might just want to take the computer to a competent repair shop and have
them take care of it for you.
