Hi
I am thinking of building workstation with 2 dual core xeons.
With HT enabled system will have 8 (logical) cpus.
My question is will WIN XP pro handle 8 cpu system?
If not, any other operating system(NOt expensive) recomendations?

Thanks

Two dual core cpus will only give you four logical processors.

However, I don't believe XP Pro can handle more than two.

Hi Kerry.
May be we sould use correct terms.
In dual xeon setup board will contain 2 dual core xeons.
Each socket is one processor for the XP pro.
each processor contains 2 cores, so we have 2 socket*2 cores=4 cores.
If we enable HT, each core will have 2 logical 'cpu', so 4 cores * 2 = 8 'cpu'
so XP pro's task manager wil show 8 'cpu' .

Hi tfw
processors
well: 4 phisical and 4 logical processors.

Windows XP Pro can only support 2, so you would need some thing like
Server 2000/2003 to get the maximum performance out of your hardware
(do note that windows servers only support 32 logical proccessors),
unless you do the clever thing and switch to Linux/BSD (do note that,
in theory, Linux/BSD supports an unlimited number of logical
processors).
