Win XP Pro Installation Repair

This is a repeat posting of another question that was not satisfactorily completed. Please respond to this posting and disregard the other.

Question follows:

I recently ran a repair of the XP Professional installation for my daughter's computer. She was studying in Spain and had picked up a number of viruses. I suspect that the viruses corrupted some of her Windows files. For example, msconfig cannot be successfully executed.

After completing the repair procedure once, I was able to log on successfully. The system tried to update some of the files but could not find them on the XP Professional CD. I was also able to log off successfully.

The next time I tried to log on, the system showed the logon display appeared for a moment, but then the system looged me off within five or ten seconds. This happened for all users (including administrator) in regular and safe mode. Note that I was able to log in to the recovery console using the administrator's password.

What changes to I need to make to prevent the system from logging off, so that I can finish making updates and repairs? I would prefer not to do a clean install, as I might lose some data.

Thanks,

Walt

Good reason(s) for having a backup,or a file transfer cd with user settings on
it.Repair doesnt always work, the time it takes to repair,a new copy of xp
could/should have been installed, you can try recovery(boot to xp cd),press
enter for password, then at cmd screen type:CHKDSK C: /R When its thru,
type:EXIT Let xp restart,if you can get on desktop,R.click the task bar,or press
Ctrl_Alt and Delete,open task mgr,new task,type:cmd In cmd type:
Sfc /Scannow Install xp cd,exit the info page.

A repair install of XP wouldn't have removed viruses. It may be that the
viruses weren't active during the repair install, but were active after a
reboot from the hard drive.

You might want to try a parallel install where you install XP to a different
directory, then you can boot into that installation, grab whatever files you
don't want to lose, and then you can format and install clean. Or, you could
try removing the viruses while booted into the new installation, then see if
you can get into the old one.
