WIN XP Pro Chkdsk /f fails to run

I am having a problem with my PC running Win XP PRO. Running CHKDSK
check only on my C Drive reports "Windows found problems with the file
system. Run CHKDSK with the /f option to correct these."

When I try to run CHKDSK /f it fails to at run at Boot up despite
scheduling the run. I have checked that the Bootexecute key is being
set correctly in the registry but it just refuses to run.

Anybody seen this or have any suggestions.

TIA & Merry XMAS.

Try running CHKDSK from the Safe Mode. See "A Description of the Safe
Boot Mode Options in Windows XP"

Yes I did try this earlier and I got the same result CHKDSK still cannot
run with the Disk mounted and when I say yes to scheduling at restart
nothing happens.

I should also mention that I have tried using the repair console as well
but that is requesting an Admin password which I have never set. Just
pressing enter doesn't work. So I started Windows and set an Admin
password but in the repair console it won't accept that password. So
whatever has happened to the disk seems to have messed up the repair
console as well.

The silly thing is the system is still working apart from long delays at
Boot time.
