win xp pro boots very slow

when i power on my computer with xp pro operating system
blank black screen appears for almost 30seconds before
appearing 'starting windows progress bar' and win xp logo
why is it taking so long time at that step
and inside windows also when two three files are
simultaneously worked then its performance drastically
reduces and sometimes it freezes

what should i do now
