My friend has a Dell with Win XP Home edition installed.
Recently a lightning strike cooked her motherboard.

If I replace the motherboard can I reinstall her Win XP
using the original disks?

What about registering it with the new motherboard

John

You will PROBABLY have to reactivate, but it's no
big deal.

Only if you replace the Dell motherboard with
another Dell motherboard.

Probably not. You're talking about an OEM version of XP. That's valid
only for the computer on which it was originally installed.
Preinstalled OEM systems are usually locked to the BIOS on the
motherboard (though I don't know that for certain about Dells).
Installing another motherboard means a different BIOS, and your
operating system won't go.

If you get a replacement board from Dell it will come with the original
'BIOS lock' and not need activating. Use the product key on the label on
the back of the machine. If you use a different board, then it will
fail that lock, and come up with the need to activate. As this has not
been done before I *think* you will find it goes through on the net in
the usual way. If by chance it does not, the explanation should be
accepted on activating by phone,
