Win XP Install Problem

I was trying to upgrade install Win XP Home on Win ME. At the very end of the
installation an error came up and it rebooted automatically. (did not have
time to record error type) When I tried to install again, the computer now
says "primary hard drive fail" even though it lists the hard drive as maxtor
romulus DAH017KZ. Is there anything I can do to install any operating system
on this now? I had no problems before installing XP.
