in the last few days, IE only allows one window to be open at a time. I
typically use "right click" and "open in a new window" and it has worked as
expected. for some reason, now the second window is opened and a few
moments later, the original window is closed.

I get the same functionality if I launch a second IE session.

I have tried

tools>options.advanced> reset defaults
tools..."reuse windows for launching shortcuts"

I am using norton internet secuirty and personal firewall for about 2
months, and have performed a full scan.

If you have Yahoo Companion, Google toolbar, MSN toolbar, a firewall,
Earthlink (or another pop-up blocker) My IE2 (a shell for IE) etc.
Yahoo Companion is a very common cause.

You'll have to turn off the feature that's blocking new windows or, perhaps,
uninstall the program (especially uninstall Yahoo Companion).

With some programs of this type, using Ctrl+click or Shift+click will allow
a new window.

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.
Try clearing "Use DDE"

If you're *sure* that another program isn't causing this, these links may
help.
