Hi,
When I loaded Norons AntiVirus, I received a message that my WIN XP
FIREWALL is to be negated , and that the Norton Firewall will take ove
because it stops worms. DUH?

Will I lose all the other benefits of a fire wall that WIN XP has?
Will Norons provide those as well as worm protection? What gives?

I'm confuuuuuuused~

Thanks,
Mike

Do you also have a Firewall by Norton with your anti-virus? If so, then that
firewall is better than XP's as XP's firewall is great for blocking anything
inbound, but doesn't catch, nor does it alert you to anything outbound that
you have on your PC.

Personally though, I wouldn't let anything Norton's through my front door.

You only need, and should, use one firewall. Use Norton's
and disable Windows XP's firewall.

Norton's firewall offers more advanced control over the traffic that passes
through your computer and you also might wish to block outgoing traffic
(that is the traffic from your computer out to the Internet). The firewall
within Windows XP blocks only incoming, not outgoing, traffic.

This is not a problem. The Norton firewall (or almost any other
third-party firewall) is better than the XP firewall because it
is bidirectional; the XP firewall monitors incoming traffic only.

Here's my standard message on running two firewalls:

Don't run two firewalls. You achieve no extra protection, you
incur the extra overhead of running two firewalls, and you run
the risk (probably small, but not zero) of conflicts between
them.
See
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/firewall.mspx

which includes the following:

"Q. Should I use both the built-in firewall and a software
firewall from a different company on my Windows XP computer?

"A. No. Running multiple software firewalls is unnecessary for
typical home computers, home networking, and small-business
networking scenarios. Using two firewalls on the same connection
could cause issues with connectivity to the Internet or other
unexpected behavior. One firewall, whether it is the Windows XP
Internet Connection Firewall or a different software firewall,
can provide substantial protection for your computer."

Also note that if you update your third-party firewall to a new
version, the update routine will probably turn it off first. If
the Windows firewall isn't running, you will temporarily be left
with no running firewall, which is very dangerous. So turn on the
Windows firewall temporarily before doing maintenance on your
third-party firewall.

The Windows firewall monitors incoming traffic only. Almost any
third-party firewall will also monitor outbound traffic, stopping
rogue programs trying to call home, and is a better choice.

Can you, or anyone else, verify that that 'Worm Blocking' which is what is
included with NAV2005, actually is bidirectional? From the help file:

Internet Worm Protection's default settings for basic inbound port blocking
and network monitoring provide reliable network protection against worms and
other malicious Internet activity.

I leave it turned off and use XP's. XP's seemed simpler. I don't know
which is better .

No, I don't know anything in particular about Norton "Worm
Blocking." Are you just running NAV 2005 and not the Norton
Firewall? As far as I know, NAV 2005 doesn't include a firewall,
and their firewall is a separate product.

From the
help file:

port
blocking and network monitoring provide reliable network
protection
against worms and other malicious Internet activity.

Unless you can get confirmation from someone else (and I don't
think you can) that this "Worm Blocking" is a full-featured
firewall, I think you're making the right choice. The XP firewall
isn't the best choice, but it's much better than no firewall at
all, and I'm afraid that NAV 2005 doesn't give you adequate
protection.

As best as I can figure out "Worm protection" (included with NAV2005) is
some sort of firewall, but not bidirectional. When installing 2005, it does
recommend turning off Windows Firewall. And no I am not also using the
Norton firewall. I decided until I can verify that NAV2005 "worm-blocking"
was actually better than the Windows one, I'm sticking with the one from XP.
I think it is possible that someone incorrectly assumed the OP was using the
separate Norton firewall and was trying to clarify what was meant.
