Win XP (Home) locks up when accessing WIN Update

A computer used at home using WIN XP (home) locks up whenever attempting to
access Windows Update. IE accesses all other MS sites features without
difficulty. The PC is a Compaq EVO 310v. Every time it locks up, I have to
use Task Manager to terminate Windows Update. I also sent a trouble report
to MS each time this occurred. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
