I just ordered my Athlon 64 X2 processor and I want to make sure that
my current version of windows will fully support it.

I understand that I could install Win XP Home on this cpu but what I'm
really digging for is that it will use both cores.

So will XP Home USE both cores on my X2 processor ?

Thanks!

You can install WinXP (32-bit) Home on your machine. It will use both
cores (but would not use both CPUs on a dual processor machine). It
will not make use of any 64-bit capabilities, in order to do that
you'd need the 64-bit version of XP.

Both XP Home and XP Pro support dual-core processors.
XP Pro supports two physical processors, XP Home supports one.
A dual-core processor is only one physical processor.

In other words:

If you have one physical processor that is dual-core, Windows XP Home Edition
will recognize it as two separate processors and give you the benefit of both cores.

yes windows xp is design to handle duel core, i myself have the athlon 64 X2
4200, it uses both the core when needed.

Yes it will, but it will not use the 64-bit-ness of the processor; it will
treat it as a 32-bit processor. You need a 64-bit version of Windows to make
use of the chip's 64-bit-ness.

XP home only supports 1 processor so you will only use 1 of the dual cores
in a 32 bit mode capabilties of the microprocessor

Where did you here that nonsense from?

While XP Home supports one (1) physical CPU,
it fully supports the dual core capability of the CPU.

Ups, I didn't know that. From my point of view, even if dual-core
processors contain two processing cores residing on one chip, there are
still 2 CPU....

Sorry, but that's incorrect. Windows XP Will only use a single *physical*
processor, but it supports both of the cores on a dual-core processor.

Wrong! A single processor can be dual-core. In that case XP Home will
run both cores. If you have a dual-processor machine, it will run only
one processor.

Dual-core and dual-processor are quite different things!
