Hi,

Everytime I attempt to download a large file, (from a reputable
company, this time ACDSEE.COM, and last time, MS.COM, I have major
problems. Halfway through the download Windows quits on me and I'm
facing a blank screen on my monitor.

Oddly, however, the download DOES ontinue and complete successfully,
while my monitor innocently proclaims, "NO SIGNAL"! One would think
that WINXP would be required for the download.

Need help or sympathy!

Thanks, as always, for great help!

Just for grins

Do you have the monitor set to power down after a certain length of idle
time??

Right click in a open space on your desk top, then select properties, then
screen saver, then down at the bottom check your power settings.

Hope this helps

No signal is a message you could get even with XP booted. This message has
nothing to do with XP. It means you either have a problem with the cable
connection to the computer from the monitor or the other way around, a
problem with the cable or possibly a problem with the graphics card, maybe
it is not well seated.

In other words, the download continues because your computer is still booted
and connected to the internet but you have some hardware issue, apparently
intermittent that is causing the monitor to loose its connection or signal.

Mike,

This sounds like either a screensaver or monitor power management is kicking in.
Both settings can be checked in Control Panel - Display - Screen Saver.

BTW, learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a bit safer.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

If you wiggle your mouse, does the picture come back?
If so, Check you "power saving" settings.

Don't believe the MVP...

Why not? He's right. "No Signal" is exactly what some monitors display
when when they are on but the PC is not. And since the OP said the
download continues... then the PC is actually still on, windows is
still running, and his Internet connection still works.

Therefore somthing's wrong with his video hookup.

If I were the OP, I would:

1. Reseat the video card
2. Reset the cable to the back of the monitor and to the video card

If that doesn't solve it them I'd swap out the monitor and if that
doesn't fix it I'd swap out the video card.

In addition to what you've already been told:
one more option is if it works then stops thats indicative of a heat
problem.
Cideo card may be full of dust and overheating OR vents on back of monitor
may be full of dust causing IT to overheat.

Good point. I had a card that got so hot it actually discolored the
heat sink and damaged the AGP slot on the mobo. Both the card and the
mobo had to be replaced. I was not happy about that.

Thanks, xiray.

No problem.

BTW, there's one other small possibility: The user has a monitor that
allows two different connections -- serial and BNC or serial and
digital -- and has inadvertently toggled the button on the front of
the monitor to the connection that does not have a computer hooked to
it. Unlikely but, thought I'd mention it.

I'm sure you weren't
It would have been a better all if I could type though "Cideo card" ???
lol
