Win XP freezes/restarts & error reports

I upgraded from Win 95 with high expectations of XP but
the environment has proved fragile. Frequest freezes in
various programs, but always eventually when playing AVI
files, esp the new WMP. Now started to get spontaneous
restarts with the blue screen suggesting I should try a
new video adapter. As if! I have spent hours
downloading new drivers, trawling the knowledge base, and
have sent many errors to MS.
QQ. 1. Is this par for the course?
2. Is this really a HOME op System?
3. Are not MS absolutely snowed under with error reports?

Sorry, didn't mention I majorly upgraded the
hardware too. New PC has AMD chip and I have noticed
that mentioned several times by people in this forum.

Hi John,

I use AMD chips exclusively, and I've had no problems with them and WinXP.
AMD chips run hot, do you have adequate ventilation and cooling going on?
