Win XP Back-up Utility "Q"

I am dazed and confused. Running Win XP Pro SP-3 & Seagate FreeAgent GO ext
HDD for back-ups w/Win XP back-up utiliy - shadow copy option. Issue: my
back-ups increased in size as follows: 1=7.5GB, 2=15GB, 3=30GB, & 4=60GB! I
only added approx 500MB worth of files/programs between 1 & 4 sessions. I
made this discovery when I tried a fifth session and was informed that I
didn't have enuf free space to do it. I have a feeling that the utility
added all the sessions together as I went along?? I started over, somewhat
reluctant to re-format the drive, as I had no other back-ups available.
Fortunately, I got a clean session, sigh of relief! I would like very much to
unravel this mystery before I attempt another back-up session. I
followed the prompts - didn't try any "tricks". Thanks for any help you may
give!

I don't want to combine sessions. I want each to "stand alone" as I change
things on the C drive. Then I could delete the oldest session or 2 when
necessary. I keep programs & files I need - when I did my last restore I had
to "clean up" stuff I had previously deleted. How do I configure back-up
sessions accordingly? I have no clue!

The built-in MS backup tool is not really what you want then, unless you
want them older than one month each. Something like Acronis would be better
for that.
