Win xp and Win98 network speed trouble

Hi, im having trouble trying to figure out why my lan is having such slow speeds. One computer is set up on win xp and the other is set up on win 98, when i try to transfer files or play lan games(this is my lans main purpose) the speeds are ridiculously low for a 100mb t base, on the xp computer when i use the task manager too see my computers network utilization its going at 0.07%... any ideas? and both comps are set up to a network switch that is capable of 10 and 100 speeds and both cards i have set up to run at 100 instead of auto negotiation.

First, make sure you measure data rate using a single large file --
large enough that you can accurately measure transfer time with a watch.
Transferring lots of little files is always slower than a single biggie.

Next, there are at least four different transfer rates: pulling a XP file
to the W9x PC, pushing a W9x file to the XP PC, pulling a W9x file to
the XP PC, and pushing a XP file to the W9x PC. Which cases are slow,
and how much slower are the slow ones compared with the fastest case?

Your problems may be caused by bad network params. Make sure you have
the same MTU on the switch and on each PC; the MTUs should all be set to
the biggest value you can use without causing fragmentation, a value that
can be determined by using PING. Next, make sure RWIN is set to a
large value on all PCs. Google for DrTCP.exe for help setting params.

Finally, I discovered that using the same credentials (user/password)
on my XP and W9x PCs made a huge difference in some of the transfer rates.
I got ~6MB/s when the W9x PC was pushing or pulling, and 2-3 MB/s when
the XP PC was pushing or pulling. Acceptable for my 100 Mb/s LAN, but
not great; and, disappointing in that XP is slower than W9x.

Cheers, Bo

Well im learning the drtcp terms since im a newbie to networking. but heres some more information
when i "pull" or "push" a file to the xp comp its blazing fast now for some reason, but is slow if i "push
or "pull" to the win 98 computer. like sending a 35.8mb folder too the win98 computer is estimated at 20 mins
