Win XP and language support

I have few user profiles set up on my new machine running Win XP pro. On W2k
pro (my other box) settings of input locale and language preferences were
valid for the user. Under Win XP it seems to be valid for the application
only, resulting in returning to English when I move from one application to
another, e.g., from Adobe Illustrator 10 to Word 2003 and back. How to set
the language preference for the profile?

Also, to have special diacritic characters in Illustrator, on my W2K
machine, I had to run Adobe Type Manager Deluxe 4.1. With it, I could type in
Illustrator all special Polish letters. I have installed Type Manager on the
new machine, but still cannot type Polish in Illustrator but I can in MS
Word. It may be an Adobe problem, but how can I check what is managing my
fonts, Windows or Adobe's add in?

Will appreciate any comments and suggestions.

Jan,

(1) Run Control Panel -- Regional and Language Options -- 'Details...'
button, and change the Default input language to Polish (you can change
also the Key Settings here: say, use Ctrl-Shift to switch between
languages instead of the default Alt+Shift). Press Ok.

(2) Probably the answer to the second question:

Select Advanced tab after that, and make sure you have Polish set as the
language for non-Unicode programs. Press Ok.

(1) and (2) are per user settings, so each user can have his separate
language settings (default input language etc.).

(3) If you want to have Polish as the default language only after
entering using account(s), but not on the Welcome screen -- run (Start
-- Run...) Regedit after that, navigate to
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Keyboard Layout\Preload
key in the left pane, and make sure the values in the right pane are:

1 REG_SZ 00000409
2 REG_SZ 00000415

If not -- change them as here.

Mihail,

Thanks again, everything works OK now. The first entry in the registry was
not defined, the second was set to 00000409.

The problem with the Illustrator has turned out to be trivial. One has to
use the RIGHT Alt + a character key to type special diactritic. I was using
left Alt. In Word for sure, and I think in other MS applications, both are
allowed.

Jan, you are Welcome!.

BTW, Right ALT in many cases works at the modified ALT: if I recall
correct, as Shift+ALT (but if not -- then as Ctrl+ALT), so I prefer not
to use Right ALT.
