Win Vista do not start after install a IDE HD

I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium Brazilien Portuguese.
The system is installed at a SATA HD 250GB.
Now, I tried to install my old EIDE Hard Drive (120GB) and Windows do not
start saying that this is to prevent possible problems. The blue screen says
to verify if a new drive was installed, and is this case, verify if the
installation is correct...
The EIDE is the last drive in boot sequence.
It is configured as "cable select" and is connected to de middle connector
(the other connection goes to the DVD RW)
I tried to desconnect the DVD RW but was useless.
Turning off this EIDE HD the system works fine...

I need help!

Windows Vista Home Premium
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Motherboard Intel DG965RY
RAM: 2x512MB + 2x1GB = 3GB
1 HD SATA 250GB
1 HD EIDE 120GB
1 DVD RW

What happens if you set it to slave? Also, does the BIOS recognize the drive
and list it last in the boot sequence?

Can you boot into safe mode and run CHKDSK?

Fernando:
1. First of all, we've encountered situations (at least re the XP OS) where
the system will balk at booting when it detects a defective HDD, even though
the HDD is a secondary HDD. So at the outset it would be a good idea to
download the HDD diagnostic utility from the website of the manufacturer of
that HDD to test the disk to determine whether the drive itself is
non-defective.

2. We'll assume that you've properly connected/configured your EIDE (PATA)
HDD as Cable Select and that the data cable is non-defective. Can you try
another IDE data cable?

3. You say you've tried to disconnect the optical drive (presumably also
configured as CS, right?) but it was "useless". What do you mean by that?
After disconnecting the optical drive, did you attempt to connect that
secondary HDD as the Master device on that IDE channel, but you still ran
into the same non-booting problem? Is that what you mean?

4. Have you tried connecting the PATA HDD as a Slave on that IDE channel?

5. I take it the PATA HDD has an operating system (Vista?) installed on it
and is (potentially) bootable. Is that right? If so, what happens when you
disconnect your SATA HDD and attempt to boot to the PATA HDD? Will the
system boot?

6. If you remove the PATA HDD from the BIOS boot order (without physically
disconnecting it), the system boots OK?

Thank you Anna! your question makes me think about. Yes, this HDD has two
partitions, the first one for Windows XP SP2 and the second for my files.
I put back the HDD at my old PC and use Partition Magic to delete Windows
partition from that HDD. Returning to my new PC with Vista, the PC starts
with an automatic Intel configuration and after that Windows Vista starts.
Now the HDD is working fine!

Just to answer some questions:

The Intel BIOS always recognize the drive, but the Windows Vista do not
start with the HDD installed (becouse this HDD has a Windows on it...)

I use "cable select" since the beginning, and I leave as "cable select",
works fine now.

Thanks Anna and Dustin for your help

Fernando
