win init problem

(Where is the troubleshooting/help section for the XP
forums, I didn't see it?)
I am using XP home.
Anyway, I have a problem with booting. When I boot,
everything loads normally, for the most part. I can see my
desktop background. However, my start bar, desktop icons,
etc do not load. The computer starts acting funny and kind
of lagging. So what I did is I pressed CTRL ALT DEL. Up
pops the windows task manager. At the bottom, my CPU usage
fluctuates from 60 to 80 to 100, but generally stays around
95+%. Now I wondered why, as I load few things during boot
up. Under applications in the task maanger, only thing
listed is task manager. So, I am confused as to how the CPU
usage could be so high with only task manager running. I
scroll to "processes" in the task manager. Here, the few
processes that I normally run (mostly just the essentials)
are listed as usual. However, I notice that there are
*TONS* of instances of "wininit" or "win init". Literally
50+. This has happened the past 10 or 12 boots. I shut down
and restart, same thing. Shut down, let it sit, restart,
same thing. If I leave it be, eventually it gives me an
error message like "could not initialize". Only way I can
stop this massive amount of processes is by doing "end
process tree." However, when I do this, I still am without
my startup bar, desktop icons and overall functionality.
I've tried running trojan scanners, anti-virus, scan disks
before boot up, spyware/malicious stuff removers, but I
cannot seem to fix the problem. I think it is possible it
relates to the registry in some way, however I am not sure.
I really want to fix this problem, it is aggrivating. Can
anyone give me an idea what I should try?

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Hm, yes. I had run every one of those programs, except the
taskbar repair one. It's actually "user init" not "wininit"
that keeps popping up, sorry for the mistake. I think
there's something else wrong though that none of these
programs can repair, because i've tried them all. Thanks
for your help.

Hi,

Suggestion: Start/Run/Regedit/OK.

Navigate to the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\
Userinit

If the path in this key looks like this:

C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe

Double click the value and change it to this:

C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,

Note: include the last comma.

Select OK. Press the F5 key, exit Regedit, Reboot.

Good luck!
