Win Explorer hangs for 5 minutes tehn resumes

Whenever I try to save a document in a different
directory, the "SAveIn" dialog box comes up and appears to
hang when I select the drop down menu arrow. The hourglass
remains fixed for several minutes and then it operates
normally. This is driving me nuts. Can anyone help?
