SP-4 will not complete the installation, it goes through
until it is copying files and then comes up with an
undefined error and I have to uninstall what it has done.

post the last few lines of svcpack.log (located in \winnt) to the NG so that
we can see what part of the SP install is failing.

Hi Daniel . . . and Philip of course,

I apologise for 'gatecrashing' your posting Philip, I
genuinely hope that it's not VERY bad etiquette, it's
just that I'm also having 'a nightmare' installing SP4
[on a Win2K Notebook PC], but the Error Message that's
causing ME a problem is this . . .

"The file c:winnt\system32\dllcache\icwconn1.exe is open
or in use by another application. Close all other
applications and click Retry."

If anyone can offer any insight into solving this
problem, it would be much appreciated. I HAVE posted this
request in this NG previously and received some very good
and welcome feedback, but still the problem persists.
I've included below the thread that was generated from my
initial posting. To try and avoid detracting any further
from Philip's posting, I've drawn a line under his thread
(Physically you understand . . . Not metaphorically!) and
pasted mine in afterwards at the foot of this message.
Some of the information contained therein may also
(hopefully) give some 'pointers' to Philip, and anyone
else who was drawn to this thread by HIS original Subject
line, i.e. "Win 2k SP-4 issue"

Please forgive me for any libertys that I may have
taken . . . and good luck to Philip! I genuinely hope
that your problem gets resolved soon too.

Kev' :-)

And NOW, it's back to Philip & Daniel Chang . . .

The following is my original posting of 6th October 2003,
followed by the resultant thread, and finishes with an
update of the current situation as of today - i.e. still
unresolved! If anyone can offer any further insight after
reading through all of the following info', it would be
much appreciated . . .

Hello,

I have tried over & over again to install Windows Service
Pack 4 for Win2000 on an 'Atlas Flyer' Notebook PC (I've
tried both the Express & Network install versions). I've
never had any problems with installing previous SP's on
this PC, or any other PC come to mention it . . . 'til
now that is!

The installation starts okay, and then 'goes off' to
check the configuration settings. After a minute or so it
returns with the following Error message . . .

"The file c:winnt\system32\dllcache\icwconn1.exe is open
or in use by another application. Close all other
applications and click Retry."

Using my limited knowledge, along with some extensive
rummaging about, led me to believe that the Internet
Connection Wizard needed to be closed (?!?), but it
definitely wasn't running. In fact the Task Manager
confirmed that no other applications OR processes (apart
from the default System processes) were running - See
next paragraph.

I've tried shutting down EVERY application before running
the setup.exe file, including ZoneAlarm Pro & the AVG
AntiVirus (YES, I know . . . But that's how desperate
I've been in my attempts!). I've even opened up Microsoft
ActiveSync and disabled every connection option, to try
and fool Windows into thinking it wasn't there - In case
it was just Windows . . . being Windows! I've also
disabled the Screensaver and taken the bulb out of the
fridge, all to no avail.

If anyone else has encountered this problem and can shed
some light on the situation (and I don't mean the
fridge :-)), I'd be very grateful for your insight. . . A
solution would be a REAL bonus.

Thank you for reading as far as this, and I look forward
to a 'hopeful reply'

Kshaky.

Hi

Files in the dllcache folder is never directly used by an
application, so that can not be the issue at hand here.
This can be caused by a permission/rights problem on the
file/folder...

The permission/rights on the file/folder can be corrupt,
missing or revoked. Verify that e.g. Administrator and
SYSTEM have full control over the file.

Several other people have had this problem for Win2k SP3
upgrades as well as WinXP SP1 , on other files, with the
same error message. After they fixed the access rights,
the service pack install succeeded.

Hi Torgeir,

Thanks for your 'Reply posting', and please forgive me on
two counts - 1) This is the first time I've been active
within any Newsgroup, so I hope MY reply ends up where it
should do, and in the right context . . . and, 2) It's
just gone midnight here in UK so I'll have to keep this
particular reply brief, but I will let you know if and
when I achieve success.

What you're saying does seem to make sense (Said 'The
senseless one'! :-)), could you be kind enough to give me
a pointer towards what I need to do to "Verify that e.g.
Administrator and SYSTEM have full control over the file"
etc?

The PC in question is in the office where I work, so I'll
have another look at it in the morning, now with the
added benefit of YOUR insight. That alone gives me
another avenue of investigation to wander down, so thanks
again . . . I'll let U know!

Subject: STILL 'No Go'! - Win2000 SP4 (STILL) Won't
Install . . .

From: "Kev" <[email protected]>

Sent: 10/19/2003 7:30:00 PM'ish

Following Torgeir's advice (Thank you :-)) I granted full
control to Administrator, SYSTEM . . . and ALL the other
User Accounts listed. I applied these settings to both
the icwconn1.exe FILE as well as the Connection Wizard
FOLDER (I figured that I'd give SP4 EVERY opportunity to
access EVERYTHING, and then change the permissions back
if and when it successfully installed). I also tried
making sure that every other program, including the
Screensaver, was shutdown - As mentioned in my original
posting - Similarly, I have also tried installing SP4
WITH the usual background programs (AVG; ZoneAlarm Pro;
MailWasher Pro 3.1; MSN Messenger; MSGTAG etc, etc) still
running . . . Well, I find that PC's actually respond
better to 'illogicality' sometimes - Usually AFTER you've
just spent 3 or 4 of your valuable weekends using the
logical approach!!!

CONCLUSIONS TO DATE: In a nutshell, this hasn't changed
the situation as far as being able to install SP4, I
still get the Error Message . . .

"The file c:winnt\system32\dllcache\icwconn1.exe is open
or in use by another application. Close all other
applications and click Retry."

So here I am again, still at 'square one' and looking for
some help from all you good guys 'n' gals here in
the 'Win2000 General NewsGroup'.

'Hoping to hear . . .

Kev' - Surrey.

It's pointing to it in dllcache. Maybe the file there is
damaged. Try running sfc /scannow on the machine.

Hi Joseph,

I hope you won't mind me e-mailing you 'direct' in
relation to your input on my Newsgroup posting of 19th
October. If you DO, please don't hesitate to tell me so
by return. I did post this as a 'legitimate' reply as
well, but I figured that you were unlikely to go trawling
back through every post that you've replied to -
Anyway . . .

I followed your welcome advice, i.e. I TRIED to
run "sfc" - by typing "sfc" in to the search window and
then running the Application file directly from the
Folder that it was located in (c:\windows\system. . . If
MY memory serves correctly) - the only result being that
a window flashed up, quite literally for a millisecond,
and then promptly closed itself again before I could get
my cursor or keyboard anywhere near it. It appeared to be
the type of window that has a black background and
DOS/Plain 'type text'. I also tried examining the
properties of, and opening/clicking all the other 'sfc
files' (.dll's, Application Extensions etc) just on
the 'off-chance'!

Does this behaviour (The Application file's . . . Not
mine!) indicate anything of relevance, or can you suggest
anything else that it might be worth trying to enable me
to get SP4 safely installed?

Any & all suggestions will be welcomed!

Many thanks.

Kev'. (Surrey UK)

PS: My first attempt at sending this message failed last
night, so if this one does make it through allow me to
update you on the thread. "Enkidu" <[email protected]>
(AKA Cliff) has since posted one more suggestion, which
I'll try when I get a spare moment in the office over
this coming week. However, if you have any further
suggestions or advice - Please 'feel free'. Cliff

You need to run it from a command prompt. Click
Start/Run, type "cmd" then enter.

You can then enter the command at the prompt.

Cheers,

Well SFC is meant to be run from a cmd window. So you
should run cmd, then in the command window, sfc /scannow.

I don't mind you emailing me directly but I ask that it
not become a habit as I do tend to post a lot on my own
free time and I don't have a lot of time to help everyone
individually. Let me know what else you need
