Win 2k And Win ME

T

Tim

Hi
I am On A Small home network, i have Win 2K On My PC,
Win ME On One other, And Win 98 On 2 Others. Now My
Problem Is The Win ME PC can't accsess my shares (The Win
2K Shares) the ME PC askes for a password But i Dont Have
anything like that on it, it is set for everyone to
accsess it(not that the ME PC is setup for any of that
stuff). I also Cant accsess the ME shares(From 2K), It
Askes me what to login as but The ME PC is not setup for
anything like that either it has no passwords or anything
on it.

Is There A Way Around It?

First of all, I am not one of the support pros that monitor this line, but I
saw your question and think I may know the answer.
Are you running the Netbios? Win9x and ME require Netbios for file shares.
the other thing would be to suggest is to reload the networking.

Is 2K formatted with an NTFS file system? If yes you wont be able to access the shares from the 9x/me systems in a peer to peer environment. As for trying to access the 9x/ME shares from 2K; try setting a share level password and using it to access the ME system, or defining a user account on the downlevel systems and suppliying those credentials.

Sorry, but you are utterly wrong on this.

You need to set up a user on the Windows 2000 computer that has the same
name (and password, if one is used) used to log onto the WindowsMe computer.
The same answer applies to the other problem, the WindowsMe computer must
have a user with the same name (and password, if one is used) that is used
to log onto the Windows 2000 computer.

You may just find it easier to create the same user on both computers and
then use that user name and password to log onto both computers.

9x/me can't access an ntfs file system in a PEER TO PEER network. There needs to be a server to provide the downlevel client with access to the ntfs formatted shares. If its just a matter of having the correct account information then your information is correct.

Sure they can without any problem. Either the guest account would need to enabled on
the W2K non domain computer offering shares or a user account with matching
logon/password needs to be in the local sam of the W2K computer that the W98 user
uses to logon to Windows Networking on his computer. All a domain controller does
[among many other things] is to centralize authentication for domain members so that
50 servers don't need all the users accounts in their local sam. --- Steve

Ah I guess your right, its only if the 9x/me installation is on the same computer that it cant access an ntfs drive... someone convinced me otherwise once upon a time... Sorry!

Thankyou,
I Didn't Realise That It Was as simple as enabling the
guest account (which i thought was already enabled!). But
Now we are able to accsess things between the 2K And The
ME PC's.

I Think It didn't really like being an upgraded version (I
Have now done a clean Install) Of 2K, as before when it
had been upgraded there was no network access between 2K
and any other computer on the network, we were also having
troubles with SP 4 with the upgrade but now with the clean
install it is much better, also after the clean install 2K
could access ME But not the other way around before Guest
was enabled.

Anyway, Thankyou Very Much, we now have a nice happy 2K
system wich can communicate with other PC's on the network.
