Win 2000 SP4 upgrade - now getting server time out

P

Peter

I upgraded Win 2000 Pro to SP 4 and now I can't import (or make
changes to) my large Access database.

Details:

Win 2000 Pro SP4
FP 2002 (10.2623.2625)
Access 2000 (9.0.2720)

I have 4 databases in my FP web. Three are under 500KB and the large
one is 2.1MB. The three small ones open fine in Access, I can make
changes and I can also import.

However the 2.1MB database opens OK in Access, but when I close the
table and return the FP, I get a message: "The server connection timed
out." I also get this message if I try to import the database from
wwwroot.

Has something been reset to limit file sizes in the Win 2000 SP4
upgrade?

Thanks,

Peter

Export the database to from FP to your desktop, then open in Access.

Working directly with the database in Access via FP can sometimes cause the
database to become corrupt, best to always work on it outside the FP
environment by exporting and then re-importing when done. However when you
are working in the database via Access on the live site, the database is not
accessible by site visitor, also depending on how your database is being
used uploading and download could result in overwriting info. The best
solution is to build a set of admin pages so that you can manage the
database from your browser.

Thanks for your message.

I exported the db to the desktop, made a change and tried importing
into Frontpage as you suggested. I still get "The server connection
timed out."

The only way I can make changes to this db is to navigate to
wwwroot/mywebsite/mydatabase.mdb from Access. However, smaller dbs
still import/export with no problem. I guess I'll just have to live
with it. I thought upgrading to Win 2000 SP4 may have caused the
problem.

Have you considered using FTP for the upload/downloading the database?

Peter,

Since this is only local machine, I don't have a clue at what could be the
cause. Have you run a check on the FP extensions from the IIS MMC for the
web?
