Hi there,

I am trapped in some sort of 'loop' while trying to re-install Win 2000 pro.
The set up process hangs somewhere half way and when rebooting with or
without the CD in the drive, the set up goes through the first few steps and
hangs at the same point.

Any ideas?

Try starting over. To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000
install CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four install disks can be created
from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the
CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and
follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Thank you Dave,

I am creating 4 start up disks from the Win 2000 CD ROM. Could you please
walk me through this step by step?

Sure, just tell me what step you're hung up on. If at all possible just boot
the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom

It's complicated- I have trying booting with the Win 2000 CD ROM but that's
when the computer hangs while in the install process. That's why I followed
your recommendation to try and boot with the floppies to try and repair the
install process but that didn't work. Trying to exit the install process
failed as well.
Should we do this by phone?

Sounds like you're not booting the CD-Rom. You may need to change the boot
order in cmos setup. Then at POST watch for the keystroke f2, spacebar, etc.
to tell it to boot from the CD-Rom. Failing that boot from the setup
floppies. I wouldn't bother with a repair install. Better to start a new
install.

Thank you. Indeed. I hadn't gotten that part. So I am doing that now. The
computer is booting on the Win 2000 CD ROM and this launched the set up
process which a chose to be 'clean' (formatted the main and only partition),
reboots (I am leaving the CD ROM in the drive at this point) and then it
goes into another Set up process and hangs and the 'installing devices'
screen.

Nevermind. It worked. I spent the day on this damn thing but I am getting
there now. Only one thing remains...Lan Internet connection exists and is
active but IE cannot browse the net- I get the 'cannot find the site' page.

From a comand prompt;
ipconfig /all
and compare the result with what your ISP thinks you should have. Most
likely missing the DNS server entries.
