Win 2000 install problems (no CDROM dive!)

M

M.J.

Hi

I have been using a computer with Windows95. I attempted to load
Office 2000 (pro) but it kept reverting to win95 when I booted it up.
I then formatted the hard drive using the win95 boot floppy, hoping
that a clean install would solve my problems. Now my CDROM is not
working (it flashes but doesn't spin or eject). I got a message which
ended d: /nospin??? when I attempted to boot using the win95 floppy.
I then used a win98 floppy to get my CDROM driver back but now I get
the message "CDR101: Not ready reading drive E".

I have downloaded the Windows NT boot floppies from Microsoft but when
I attempt to start the computer with these I get "Disk I/O error"...

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Are you installing Windows 2000? To do a clean install, either boot the
Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four install disks
can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk
directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe
(from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

Ummm... Installing Office 2000 will not change your operating system.
Office is things like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. WIndows is what it
all runs on.
I then formatted the hard drive using the win95 boot floppy, hoping
that a clean install would solve my problems. Now my CDROM is not
working (it flashes but doesn't spin or eject). I got a message which

Possibly the Win95 boot disk doesn't have the right driver for your CD
drive. It will still spin up because it is powered and the BIOS can talk
to it, but not Win95.
I then used a win98 floppy to get my CDROM driver back but now I get
the message "CDR101: Not ready reading drive E".

Could be similar to the above.
I have downloaded the Windows NT boot floppies from Microsoft but when
I attempt to start the computer with these I get "Disk I/O error"...

That usually means that there is a problem reading from the floppy
disks. Try re-creating the disks using a different set of disks

I've tried to find the bootdisk directory on the Office 2000 CDROM on
a working puter and it's not there - I understand from Neil's post
that WIndows 2000 and Office 2000 are not the same - maybe that's the
problem?

My other concern is that, as I've mislaid my original 95 CDROM I had
to download the win95 boot disk from somebody's website (can't
remember which one) could it be that this disk is no good?

Can anyone point me towards a reliable d/l for the boot disk>

Cheers all

* Doesn't exist. Lets start by telling us what you have and what you expect
to have when you're done. Is there an operating system installed? If so what
OS? If not what OS are you trying to install. Office 2000 is an application
suite not an operating system.

* What is the win9x disk for?

Hi Dave thanks for your response

Ok I'm obviously confusing my operating suites with my operating
systems...
| My other concern is that, as I've mislaid my original 95 CDROM I had

I was hoping to load a new operating system but all I've succeeding in
doing is obliterating my CDROM drive :)

If I can find a way of restoring the CDROM drive I might be in with a
chance of loading windows again and then installing Office 2000 which
was my original intention...

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing

cheers
