Win 2000 file missing or corrupt

My son at college is receiving the following;

Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: <Windows 2000 root>\system32
\ntoskrnl.exe

Please reinstall a copy of the above file.
 
Hi.

It could be that your boot.ini is missing or corrupt. Make sure it
shows the OS installation as Windows 2000 Professional and not XP or
something else. If it is missing, try to copy or create a new boot.ini
for windows 2000. Feel free to email me if you need to know how to do
