Win 16 subsystem has insufficient resources

Nancy

When I try to open a games application, I get the
msg. "The Win 16 subsystem has insufficient resources to
continue running. Click OK, close all applications, and
restart your computer." I'm running Windows XP. What
can I do?

Hi Nancy,

Which game is it? Is it possibly an older DOS game?

When a game is a DOS game, it could work using compatibility mode:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292533 or by using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html
and always check at fileplanet.com to see if there's a patch available.

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php Or try MS Virtual PC:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/downloads/trial.asp
which allows you to install DOS or to run any operating system inside XP.

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, here are two excellent
tutorials I've found on the subject: http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php
and: http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm :)

Thanks for the input Jimmy. The games are things that
came on the system, like poker, tripeaks, and such.
They've been working in the year we've had this system.
This just started happening. I did upgrade a desktop
weather application the same week as this message started
coming up. I've written to them as well and am waiting
to hear.

Hi Nancy,

That this started after you installed the weather application
is definitively a great clue. Uninstall that application, reboot,
and see if the games work without error. If they still fail, use
Win XP's System Restore to return your system to a stable state:

Unfortunately, something odd happened to system restore
as well. I tried to do that first thing, but it wouldn't
give a restore date beyond 10/26/03. I looked at my
computer's error log and it read, "The System Restore
filter encountered the unexpected error '0xC0000040'
while processing the file 'http---med .. 080....lnk' on
the volume 'HarddiskVolume1'. It has stopped monitoring
the volume." This message was dated 10/26/03. Then
another same exact message dated 9/8/03 was there too,
but the file was 'http---smi .. -1p....lnk' I'm afraid
to uninstall the desktop weather, because it's a paid
subscription and if I uninstall it, I won't be able to
reinstall without paying for it again. It's hard to get
those folks to respond to our needs with that program.
I've written them about this as well, but still have had
no response. Thanks for any additional help you can
provide, including what to do about system restore!

Hi Nancy,

Try these steps to see if they solve it for you. Good luck! :)

1. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm

2. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com Afterwards
Download & Run Spybot from: http://security.kolla.de to find any
Trojans, Adware, or Spyware which could clog up your system.

3. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
/ Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run
the "Error-Checking" and "Defragmentation" utilities.

4. Unplug from your Internet connection, and then repair Windows:
using this method: http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Afterwards, boot up your system, turn on your XP Internet Firewall,
plug back into your Internet connection and install all Critical and

Jimmy,
Thanks for the suggestions--the games have begun working
again as mysteriously as they had quit working. My guess
is that desktop weather tech support changed something in
their application. I contacted them about this since
their application is the only thing new on my system.
It's always on and updating every 5 minutes. They never
got back with me, so it's just a guess. Anyway, if it
messes up again, I'll post again!
