Win 16 subsystem has insufficient resources

Nancy

When I try to open a game application, I get the
msg. "The Win 16 subsystem has insufficient resources to
continue running. Please click OK, close your
applications, and restart your machine." What does this
mean, and how can I fix this error? I'm running Windows
XP Home Edition.

Does anyone ever get a reply here? How does this board
work, coz I don't see any replies to people's questions?

Paul, thanks for the suggestion. I brought up the MS DOS
window to test the Ntvdm subsystem like the support
website suggested. The prompt came up just fine. I'm
basically computer illiterate, so I'm not sure where to
go next. Any suggestions? Should I be typing something
in and testing it? Thanks.

likely never see this.. But clikc on the (+) sign. heh

The response you got before was from Paul Hodges:

This is a troubleshooting ms-dos applications under windows xp article.

If it doesn't help, come back.

This game you're trying to run, is it an old game that you used to run under
windows 98 or earlier ? Did you download it from the net, if so, whats it
called ?

Have you tried running it in compatability mode ?
Right click on the game you are trying to run and select properies, then
under the compatability mode tab, select whatever you used to run it under.

The games that I'm trying to run are the games that I
transfered from an old computer that had Windows 98 on it
about a year ago (Poker, Tripeaks, etc...). They've been
working fine until last week. The only new thing I can
think of is that I upgraded a desktop weather application
that we subscribe to a few days before I started getting
this message. I tried to do a system restore, but
something funky happened to that too. In the error log
on my computer, it said that on September 8, 2003, "The
system restore filter encountered the unexpected
error '0xC0000040' while processing the file 'http---
med .. 080....lnk' on the volume 'HarddiskVolume1'. It
has stopped monitoring the volume." Then again on
10/26/03, the same type of message with the exception of
the file name. It was 'http---smi .. -1p....lnk'. As a
result, I couldn't restore the system past 10/26/03.
Pretty complicated, huh? Any more suggestions for either
the Win 16 subsystem insufficiency or the system
restore? Thanks again, Paul.

Hey Nancy,

This MS Knowledge Base article refers to your problem. I've seen several
posts concerning this error.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;812119

Out of interest, Do you have Real Player installed ?
Of course it may be another 3rd party application causing it.

As to the main problem, the only thing that comes to mind at the moment, is
the some program you installed has made changes to either
\windows\system32\config.nt or \windows\system32\autoexec.nt

Can you post the contents of these 2 files ?

If you need detailed instructions, let me know

Hey Paul,
Yes, I do have Real One Player. We don't use it often--
mostly just comes up when required for viewing internet
video. We mostly use Windows Media Player. I checked
out that article regards to the system restore. It
doesn't look like I can reverse that problem and get back
the previous restore dates. That's a bummer!
I could post the contents of those two files you asked
about, but I'm concerned about safety issues. I know
that they are read files, but they do contain info about
my system. Is this a problem? Is there something I can
look for on it? It does state that AUTOEXEC.NT and
CONFIG.NT are "used to initialize the MS-DOS environment
unless a REM different startup file is specified in an
application's PIF." Thanks again for your help, Paul.

Just as mysteriously as it started happening, it has
stopped! I'm opening the games without any difficulties
now. The only thing I can think of is I also contacted
the desktop weather tech support since that was the only
change I made that week, and maybe they did something
from their end (it's always online and updating every 5
minutes). They still haven't contacted me, so it's a
long-shot guess, but....can't think of a reason why these
application would suddenly work. Thanks for your input,
Paul, and if the problem comes up again I'll post again!
