Hello,
I am thinking of installing Windows Vista, btu not sure whether it would
keep all the original files I had on my laptop (non-system files such as My
documents and so on). Does anyone have any idea on that? Thanks!

It should. But as with any major modification to your computer (and
installing an upgrade of the OS is a major modification) you should always
make sure you have a good and current backup just in case things go bad.
Add to that the fact that this is a beta release, not production quality,
and that just increases the need to be cautious.

Be warned it does overwrite the boot drive MBR and use it's own OS loader so
if you delete Vista and it's bootloader, boot.ini from XP will not load the
old system.
