Will sp1 files still work if I move them?

Windows Update has downloaded Service Pack 1 files and
Hotfixes to a location where I don't want them. If I take
ownership over the folders and relocate to another drive
will this screw things up because Windows can't find
them? Or must I delete them and then download them again
to another drive using Windows Catalog, perhaps. I'd
prefer to keep my existing folder because the downloads
take 10 or 11 hours over my dialup modem.

Once you have SP1 and the Hotfixes installed, you can not move the files
around.

If you are talking about the downloaded files, before they get installed,
yes you could move them.

The $NTUNinstall, , folders are only needed when you want to uninstall
the fix referred to. You can remove them provided you put them back
before trying an uninstall. Or just delete them if you are sure you
will not want to

The folder Windows\ServicePackFiles contains the service pack file
versions for use in preference to ones from the original CD if needed by
File Protection/SFC/New Hardware etc. On an NTFS drive a useful amount
of space can be saved by compressing it. What you can do is move it to
a different drive, or if you have a CD burner burn the complete folder
to a CD, then run regedit.exe and at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

Change the value of ServicePackSourcePath in the right pane to reflect
the new location
