Will someone settle this serious question?

Hi,

Being a man of unquestionable scruples, I actually purchased another
copy of WIN XP H.E. for my second computer, for home use only.

I might add that the first copy of WIN XP came with my new DELL 2400.
I'm told also that it cannot be used anywhere else but on this Dell!
Is this true? Why should DELL care, except for a possible agreement
with MS.

Mentioning this to someone, I was told that I'm a fool; that all I had
to do is call Microsoft, tell them my plight and I could get the OPSYS
activated for a second computer. No EXPENSE for another copy of WIN
XP. That is, IF THE DELL WIN XP CAN BE USED ON A SECOND COMPUTER!
What's the real scoop on this?

Does one hand not know what the other is doing? Is this true?
I'm confused! Have I been had? OR......

Dell don't, MS does. They regard OS shipped with computers as a hire for the life of the computer. It is also 1/2 price.

I probably wouldn't work on another computer.

Good for you. Personal integrity seems to be in rather short
supply these days.

OEM versions must be sold with a piece of hardware (normally
a motherboard or hard drive, if not an entire PC, although Microsoft
has greatly relaxed the hardware criteria for WinXP) and are
_permanently_ bound to the first PC on which they are installed. An
OEM license, once installed, is not legally transferable to another
computer under any circumstances. This is the main reason some people
avoid OEM versions; if the PC dies or is otherwise disposed of (even
stolen), you cannot re-use your OEM license on a new PC. The only
legitimate way to transfer the ownership of an installed OEM license
is to transfer ownership of the entire PC.

You saved a substantial amount of money buy purchasing an OEM
license. With that reduced price comes reduced options. This is
simple economics: you get what you paid for.

Yes, it may well have been possible for you to have called
Microsoft and _lied_ to the support personnel, thereby activating a
single license on two computers. In most cases, the only thing
preventing an OEM license from being transferred to a new computer (or
a single retail license from being installed upon multiple machines)
is the integrity (iow, honesty) of the computer owner. Just as door
and window locks don't deter a determined burglar, the EULA and WPA
won't stop the determined software pirate.

As it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating systems,
it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA, if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which
it is installed. The only way in which WinXP licensing differs from
that of earlier versions of Windows is that Microsoft has finally
added a copy protection and anti-theft mechanism, Product Activation,
to prevent (or at least make more difficult) multiple installations
using a single license

You've been "had," only if you believe that honesty and integrity
are for suckers.

Michael,

You have done entirely the correct thing and the person you spoke to is
wrong.
You are required to purchase a license for each machine you install Windows
XP to. And the OEM (Dell) supplied copy may not be moved or used on any
other machine then the one it was shipped on from Dell.
This is why the OEM copy cost less then a retail one. You also do not get
any support from Microsoft for OEM products for this you must go back to
Dell.

Your last statement is very, very misleading. Support for OEM products is
still avaiable at MS in the form of 'Updating', the knowledge base, update
notices and even some driver updates etc..

Support - refers to the ability to call Microsoft Product Support (PSS) or
via the online support services where no support is provided for OEM
products. ()this is not meant toi be a misleading statement)

An end user may still use the Knowledgebase as well as Windows Update -
however before installing any patches or additional software on their PCs
they should ensure that this will not cause issues with the OEM provided
products (There was a case with a certain update having an issue with a
particular vendors OEM configuration).

If an end user was any question around support for their product and it is
an OEM supplied one - there first call should be to the OEM.
