Will MS upgrade Win2k sp2 cd to Win2k sp4? New equipment requirement.

Just bought a new mobo – Asus P5GD1-VM – and I am having a hell of a
time with the install of win 2k pro.

I have Win2k sp2 cd and apparently I need sp4 cd for the drivers
required by the new hardware.

My problem - if I cant install sp2… I cant upgrade to sp4. Anyone
know if Microsoft will upgrade a Windows version cd (specifically Win
2k sp2 to Win 2k sp4).

Any other ideas of how to accomplish a win2k sp2 install when sp4 is
required. I have been told to purchase xp but that is not the
solution I am looking for.

Thanks.

No, Microsoft is not going to exchange your CD. The easiest solution is to make your own slipstreamed SP4 install CD, using a borrowed Windows 2000 or Windows XP computer, your existing SP2 CD, and the downloaded SP4 upgrade program. The easiest way to make the slipstreamed CD is to use AutoStreamer, http://www.autopatcher.com/autostreamer.html.

Or, depending on what the problematic hardware is, you might consider temporarily removing it, install SP2, upgrade it, then add the hardware and let Windows detect it.

You can make your own installation CD that includes SP4.

Works like this:

- copy the complete content of the windows installation CD into a
folder on your hard drive, e.g. D:\Data\Win2kCD\

- download the full installation file for SP4

- extract it into another folder on your hard drive by running the SP4
installation file with the /x option

- update the CD data by running the program update in the folder into
which the SP4 unpacked by specifying the /S option and the folder, e.g.
update /S:D:\Data\Win2kCD

- now the data should be updated (there might be a log file somewhere
to tell you if and what went wrong). If it worked, burn the stuff onto
a bootable CD, and voilá! You have a Windows 2000 SP 4 installation CD.

The download link on that webpage does not work; the file is missing.
If you hunt around a bit you can find a link that works. But
the number of broken links is worrying - has the software
been withdrawn from those mirrors for some reason, maybe?

Cheers,

Cliff
