Will Messenger work on a satellite system?

Bob Kruse

My good friend that I chat with every day is moving to Hickory North
Carolina where it appears they have no DSL or cable providers. Will
Messenger still work with satellite? File transfer? Video and audio?
Whiteboard? These are the things we use but mostly file transfer and
regular text chatting.

Thanks

Greetings Bob,

Technically yes, this shouldn't be a problem. However, some satellite ISPs do use NAT (that
is sharing)-based connections for their subscribers, in which case these functions won't
work. As well, if it is 1-way Satellite (the upstream part of the connection is connected
via a normal dial up connection), then these features most likely will not work either (due
to 2 IPs being used for one connection).

It is probable that if both users are using v6, we will be able to get
around these difficulties and still work, albeit very slowly.
