Will I be able to upgrade to Vista this year?

It seems for consumers, Vista may not be available until early 2007.
This and other related subjects are more active in the Vista newsgroups,
visit there for the latest updates on Vista.

But a microsoft employee promised me it would be released this year.

The Pirated XP Pro Corp. Came out before the real version of XP Pro last
time.

Maybe we have to wait till the pirates release Vista before Microsoft. LOL

Release to Manufacturing is this year - October 25, 2006. And if you buy OEM
you can get it in 2006. If you want the retail upgrade package you will have
to wait until January, 2007. If that's you, my sincere "Awwww - life sucks,
doesn't it?". But gird yourself some courage, the extra month or two will
arrive soon enough and you will be enjoying Vista to no end. In the
meantime, Microsoft Windows XP is an exciting computing platform with lots
to learn and do.

Are you sure about that?

I see no reason why there should be any excitement over 'Vista'.

What is the big deal ?

Seriously.

What about it makes it better ?

Will Vista run faster than XP on identical hardware ?

Will it run programs faster ?

Other than enhanced security what could possibly be so attractive about
Vista ?

Hey, it's a new theme right ?

It seems fairly cartoonish.

M$ seems to be making a circle back around to M$ 'Bob'.

The plan is to release Vista this year (RTM Oct 25, 2006). But not all
packages will be available this year. The retail upgrade package, for
instance, will not be available in stores until sometime in January 2007, if
all's according to plan.

Well, I hope that you got that specific employee's name, so you can
take up his violation of company policy with his supervisor. You might
also want to discuss your naivete with your parents; they apparently
failed to prepare you for the real world.

Agreed. It's just another OS.

I do like the way it tightens security, so that even users logged in as
"administrators" have to verify that they want cvertain actions to occur.

You're joking, right? Has anyone made any such claims?

Other than enhanced security what could possibly be so attractive about
Vista ?

Enhanced security is not to be sneezed at, but neither is it sufficient
reason to rush out and buy a new OS.

I'm not sure. There probably will be several big deals. I imagine some whole
government deparments and whole large corps might make the move to Vista for
their client systems.

Yes, serious money.

The OS is structured to present malware writers more obstacles.

Nothing most users will notice.

Nothing most users will notice.

Yes, while the security impprovments alone will make Vista compelling,
there's also improved searching, file identification. Intensively attractive
user interface, updated built-in apps. Many poo-hoo eye-candy, but with
Vista Microsoft seems to have done quite a nice job of it. Furthermore, the
behind the scenes graphics plumbing will enable some very interesting
programming. And there's more improvements than just eye-candy.

Some new things:

-bitlock drive encryption
-virtual folders
-voice recognition built-in
-better backup
-new interface
-new sidebar
-new browser nearing 100% standards compliance
-new email client
-new and updated games
-much improved search
-networking improvements
-better peer to peer
-calendar

Yes, the icons are deliberately "cartoonish" rather than photorealistic. I
prefer the cartoonish as I don't like the photorealistic "magazine" look.
There's no accounting for taste, is there? Otherwise the theme, overall, is
pleasantly executive / techy and business-like.

I think that comment is all wet. There's really no comparision here except
they could hardly be more un-like.

No with any pirated or cracked software! People with genuine OEM or
retail versions or Volume licensed versions should be able to get an
upgrade early next year. People currently using pirated software will
be required to buy retail versions in a box. Please read the EULA
before parting away your money to avoid stupid questions about EULA on
this NG.

He is interested in pirated version!

I am going to wait until after the first system pack arrives.

Microsoft has stalled. Nothing really startling has been developed in
years. Vista is an XP upgrade and we were promised a revolution (aka at
least an innovative file system).

Why is Frontpage stuck with no updates? VB was destroyed by going .NET.
Office delayed, OS delayed...everything delayed....for months and years.

No other company has done more to destroy itself through mismanagement than
Microsoft.

No pleasure in it though. It nearly made me weep watching Philippe Kahn
take Borland down with him.

I think it took nearly a decade for Anders Hejlsberg to pick up his
Borland Pascal work with MS C#.

Oh and let's not forget Ashton-Tate and its dbase IV debacle.
