Well, I already have the chip, just completed a system build with an
Athlon64 XP3500 and socket 939 mb.

Yes, it will only be offered in OEM version, but should be able to purchase
it same way you can purchase XP oem today. MIght have to get a screw or
something with it :).
It will be up to the OEM dealers as to how they will offer it.

I have registered and downloaded the RC2 beta, however just saw where they
have announced it will be available possibly next month, so I may hold off
on installing the beta...

Apparently, you may only be able to buy XP 64 bit as an OEM product
with a corresponding 64bit chip.

As long as they offer a way for people who already have a 64bit chip to get
hold of it, this may actually be a bloody sensible idea, to save people who
don't really know what they are buying from buying stuff that won't run on
their system.

If they didn't there are a lot of people they be pissing of that bought
AMD64 chips over the last year or so.

It did take quite a while before MS started shipping generic Media
Center OEM CDs for sale with just hardware components, instead of
complete computer systems.

Hi, you'll be able to purchase it with any hardware, just the same as any
OEM...

Yep but the point that I, and Kurt I think too, am trying to make is that is
an inconveniance for someone who purchased, for example, an athlon 64 chip
already, would be nice if they had an upgade path that didn't involve new
hardware, considering they should already meet the requirements for 64 bit
OSes.

Robert;
Whatever upgrade path may be available should be discussed with the hardware
manufacturer, they are the ones selling the hardware.
My guess is when RTM gets closer, the manufacturers may offer some options
for upgrade.
But as in the past, that is up to them.
That also does nothing for those who purchased well in advance of RTM.
Hopefully the buyers asked the correct questions at purchase and were given
reasonable answers.
Then they know what to expect.
It would be nice if Microsoft would help but Microsoft has not been a part
of the transaction at all so nothing should be expected.

Yes, they sold the hardware. Some people are concerned that their OEM may
leave them hanging. Here in the UK at least, where the market is screwed up,
many OEMs have gone out of business recently. I don't think its unreasonable
issue for people to raise, personally.

I don't think its unreasonable to expect Microsoft to make their own
products available for sale. Now I admit I'm not an economics professor or
anything, but I thought that was how capitalism worked.

I'm not expecting Microsoft to *give* anybody anything. Or *do* anything for
anybody. We're just discussing whether or not they will offer this new
product for sale.

Microsoft has stated many times that this will be OEM only.
It will probably be available at many of the same shops that currently sell
OEM Windows XP with similar terms.

Some people have already reported success in locating shops who will sell
the 64bit Windows when it becomes available.
There are many related discussions in the 64 bit newsgroups:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/64bit/x64/trial/support.mspx
That newsgroup is more correct for this information and there are more
people there specifically knowledgeable in the 64bit version.
