What with XP being so stable and groovy and all, why would anyone want
Longhorn?

You are talking about an opertaing system that is over a year from release.
That has not even entered its first Beta (everything to date has been a
developers preview).
If you want to know about Longhorn to help you answer your own question go
to .
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/longhorn/default.mspx
and
http://msdn.microsoft.com/longhorn/

If you want to discuss Longhorn please do so in the specific newsgroup (and
not the XP ones).
The current developer focused Windows Longhorn newsgroups are all under
microsoft.public.developer.winfx.*

I doubt that I would ever by it outright. But if I were buying a PC and
that's what was on it, I'd consider it.

You mean XP Second Edition? Or as the rumor mill has it named,
eXPedition?

MS has cut so much out of it, that it is hardly a compelling upgrade to
pay for a new and different OS. It's more of a Service Pack with some
eye candy changes. NT 5.11!

1. Because it's from Micros~1.
2. Because it's newer and presumably better.
3. To take advantage of the new features - whatever they may be.
4. Because millions of others will.
5. To take advantage of the built-in Global Positioning System, Ring-Tone
library, Full-color faxing, Multiple mice and mouse-sharing technology, TV
on-demand, broadband access via the municipal water system, and all the
other suggestions I've sent in.

Do you enjoy going from news group to newsgroup trying to start crap?
Longhorn is a year away from being released. Noone but a handful of
developers is using it yet.

XP vs Longhorn seems on topic to me and of interest to the posters of this
group, judging by the 12 quick replies.

Well, if that happens, I'll rush out and buy it!

You could have just been honest without the insult and said "I don't know"
unless, of course, you are a developer and don't want to share.

In addition, a lot has been leaked about Longhorn so it's not exactly a
completely unknown factor and even if it were, XP does work pretty well and
a lot of people might stick with it and not want to go through whatever
hoops Longhorn will put us through for permission to use software one has
paid for with good money.

MS will force this purchase when they stop selling XP. Tried to buy WIndows
95, 98, ME, NT or 2000 lately as a new product?

His status as a developer or not is irrelevant. The current discussion
newsgroups are developer focussed and that is where he can ask his questions
to learn more about Windows "Longhorn" as well as on the appropriate web
sites.

Hello;
Have you all forgotten that Bill gates has achieved knighthood? Surely this
is enough for all of you to loosen up the purse strings and/or get the
excess money out of the mattress and support Longhorn. Even the name
Longhorn has a "knightly" ring to it .....pip...pip...and all that. Just
wait until the Microsoft marketing cats grasp the significance of this
association. So long XP. Nice knowing you.
