Wildcard searches

How do I perform a wildcard search in windows vista? I want to find all of my
mp3 files that end in a certain way and I can't do it!

You’re probably searching the search index, which only covers files in your
personal document folders by default. In build 5472 you can click Start,
choose Search, click Advanced Search, and change the Location to include
whatever drive(s) you want to search. Then you can search from there. For
example if you want to search for all mp3 files that end in 320kbps search
for *320kbps.mp3. Or if you just want to find all mp3s you can search for
type:mp3.

If you add that location to your search index you can do that search right
from the Start menu or from the Search window without using Advanced Search
Options. It always defaults to searching the index because that’s the only
method that’s fast enough to give you keystroke-by-keystroke search results.

Thanks for the reply but I have chosen the specific folder(s) I want to
search, deselected the index and I still get the message that there are no
items matching my search - when I know there are files that match my search.
Any other suggestions?

Nothing that I can think of offhand. Works fine for me in build 5472. I
don't remember how well it worked in the CPP build. Also, you didn't show
what your wildcard search is so I don't know if it has something to do with
that or not.

I have build 5384 do you think that might have something to do with it?
As for my search I'm just trying to find some of my songs that end in a
certain way ie *bird.mp3 - I was able to do it in xp before I installed the
vista beta preview.

It could be the build. I don't have that build installed any more so I can't
verify. But Search has changed considerably from one build to the next.
