Wild Tangent

I am using Windows XP Home with a D/U internet connection. Today I went
into "Control Panel" and found a new icon for something called "Wild
Tangent Control Panel". When I opened it there was a link to a web site
which has something to do with computer games. I ran a virus check
(PC-Cillin) with the latest update and the computer is clean.

What is this Wild Tangent thing. I have no idea how it got onto my
computer. Can I delete it with no problem?

Thank you,
Bob

Bob, hey dont sweat it, lol, it actually came with my HP
so i know it cant be to harmful, but it does access the
internet with you and it will stay on your RAM, So you
might want to uninstall it. Just a comment. If your
computers new it might have came with it, or if u have
kids..well there u go, or u might have downloaded
something with it in thier. u might want to run a
spysubtract and adsubtract. Look around for freeware or
shareware.

Thank you Patti. I got rid of it by following the directions in the web
site that you gave me. After making my post I discovered that Spy Bot
had picked it up 2 days ago. The only thing left was the icon in
Control Panel which I got rid of.
Thanks again for the help

Wild Tangent has been associated with adware in the past. However, some of
the PC games played online use a component or two from this software.
You'll need to figure out which of these you have and proceed from there.

If it's adware, check for an item in Add/Remove Programs. Then use AdAware
or a similar program to remove any leftovers the uninstall did not remove.

If it's for a PC game, it should be giving you no problems and will be
needed if you will be playing online. If you don't plan on playing online,
try Add/Remove Programs again -or- possibly run the setup for the game
again and de-select the items pertaining to online play.

Sharon: I am sure this was adware. After I posted I found that Spy Bot
had picked up a bunch of files for Wild Tangent. The only thing left
was the updater icon in Control Panel which I got rid of Via the
instructions on WT web site. The only games that I have on the PC are
the ones that came with Win. XP Home and I never do play them. The
computer and XP are about 1 1/2 years old and Spy Bot picked up WT just
a few days ago. For this reason I am sure that I must have picked up WT
on some web site that I should not have visited. I will check the games
on XP and see if they work although I never use them.

Thanks to all of you for the help.

Bob, following the thread as things progressed, I think that you're right
about it being adware. Between you and Patti that has been cleared up and
is good news.

The XP games do not need Wild Tangent. By "online games," I am referring to
games such as Everquest. Everquest doesn't use Wild Tangent but games
similar to this one, do.
