Wierd...Windows XP won't completely load ....

I am running Windows Xp on a 6 year old Gateway computer. This morning I
used the computer and everything was okay. My system has been a bit
sluggish. Just figured I needed to do some housekeeping that I have not had
time to do.

Anyway, I left the computer for a short while and when I returned it was
trying to shut down. It was NOT successful. After 30 minutes of being in
the "Shutting down" phase, I forced it manually. When I re-booted, that's
when the problem arose. It won't boot up into windows. I have tried "last
known configuration", and "safe mode". It won't boot up completely even in
"safe mood". .

Upon boot up it will take me to the Log in screen, which I click on.
Shortly after that my desktop picture comes up and that's it!! NO icons, NO
task bar, NO recycle bin....just my background picture. However....Now here
is the funny thing about this...I can open the task Manager and by using
"Select New Task" I can open up several programs such as Outlook Express,
Internet Browser, Spreadsheet and databases, and they all seem to work fine.
Although I have trouble finding some of my files I can still surf the
internet and check email.

Why and HOW is this possible??? What has happened to my computer??? What
should or do I need to do to fix my computer it get it to load up completely
and run normally???

Your help is greatly appreciated. All my computer knowledge is self taught
and I have been rather successful in fixing my own computers and some of my
friends when things go wrong. However, this one has me stumped!! I have
never encountered a situation like this.
Thank you in advance for your help!!

Thanks for the response. Next question....by doing what is listed below,
will I be wiping my hard drive clean and reloading XP on a clean install?
Or will it only overwrite the existing window files to allow complete boot
up? What will I lose on my hard drive if anything?
Any idea or thoughts on what caused this to happen?
Thanks again for your help
