Hi all, I have a Radeon VE (7000) video card with a dvi output that I am
using with a standard 19" lcd. I would like to get a 19" or 20" wide screen
lcd but the resolutions that I would need don't seem to be available on the
Radeon 7000. I already installed the latest drivers from ATI as a local
tech suggested but the required resolutions (1440x900 or 1680x1050) still
don't appear on the Windows XP "settings" tab. Resolutions up to 2048x1536
are available but not the lower "wide" resolutions. Am I missing something
or is this card incapable of providing these resolutions? This is the link
to the card specifications:

Thanks
John

Instead of changing reolutions through Windows XP, do it through
Catalyst Control Center(CCC).

Once in CCC, go to "Displays Manager" and change your resolution from
there. If you do not see the resolution you need, go to "Monitor
Properties" -> "HDTV Support" and enable support for both 720 & 1080.
Once done, go back to "Displays Manager" and you should be able to see
the HD resolution you need there.

Use the 'driver' disk that should have come with your monitor.

Thanks for the reply. I did what you suggested ("Monitor Properties" showed
up as "Digital Panel Properties" but I'm assuming the difference is because
the monitor is connected to the DVI connector). "HDTV Support" only gave me
the option to enable 1080 and after I applied it, that is the only new new
resolution (1920x1080) that appeared on "Displays Manager". When I changed
the desktop area to the new (HDTV)1920x1080, I got a blank screen with a
message box in the middle saying "out of range" and an H-frequency of 68 and
a V-frequency of 60. However, when I change the desktop in Windows XP to
1920x1080, it displays fine, though it obviously doesn't fit on the monitor.

The display I am using while I'm doing all this is a standard 19" with a
native resolution of 1280x1024 and I was wondering if CCC only allows
resolutions that are compatible with the display currently connected. I
would like to verify if possible that the "wide" resolutions are available
with this card before I buy a wide display. Or do I just have to trust that
with a "wide" display connected to the card, CCC will provide the correct
resolution?

Thanks again
John

Hi John,

CCC will use the best resolution supported by your monitor through
monitor's DDC. Clicking the "HDTV Support" we are forcing those
resolution on the monitor. In your case it won't take it.

I believe if you buy a wide display with 1920x1080 CCC will provide
that resolution. Your card does support 1920x1080 at 90Hz:

I know the card will provide 1920x1080 as I am now able to use that
resolution through Windows XP, it's the lower "wide" resolutions (1680x1050)
that I can't verify. Guess I'll just have buy the new 20" display with the
1680x1050 resolution that I would like to get and be prepared to also buy a
new video card if I can't get the correct resolution with the Radeon 7000
card through CCC.

So that means you actually don't have a widescreen lcd, right?

Yes, you're missing that the drive won't show widescreen resolutions
until it detects a widescreen display connected to either VGA or DVI
port. So if you don't have a widescreen display it won't list the
resolutions...

BTW: this has been asked (and answered) around a dozen times or so
during the last weeks...

I was just hoping that I could verify the resolution before actually buying
a new widescreen display.

Yes, I see that now. I thought I researched the question as far as I could
before I asked here but I apparently didn't. Will try to do better in the
future.

Thanks for the reply and the heads-up.
