We are looking for a wide format printer to print signage at our store
with. Currently we print on an Epson 3000 and spraymount things to
foamboard. We would like to get rid of all that and print directly to a
very heavy stock that we could print on both sides of so that we don't
have to worry about the long term health risks for spray mount :)

Thanks in advance for the help

Epson's can take heavy stock, Mimaki and Roland too. HP's can't. Heavy stock is
extremely expensive the Epson coated posterboard is about $20 a sheet. You'd do
better with roll paper and a cold mounter like what Daige or Coda make and use
preglued boards. United Industries make Ultra mount which is much better than
foamcore and about the same price. Coda sells Gator foam - like board,
polystyrene (Sintra) all preglued.

Good Luck
Tom

PS if you use roll paper then also consider HP printers.

How wide?
What's your budget?
What sort of resolution do you need?
How long will the signs have to last?
Will they be in direct sunlight/outdoors?
How wide a colour gamut do you need?

anywhere from 36 - 60 would be accecptable
What's your budget?
We excpect to be under 15-20k
What sort of resolution do you need?
600-1400dpi we don't print a lot of full color picture...
How long will the signs have to last?
this is two fold...some will only last a ocuple of months...some I would
like to last for a couple of years
Will they be in direct sunlight/outdoors?
Signs that we only expect to last a couple of months will be outside.

How wide a colour gamut do you need?
no idea? so probabbly not high

It sounds like the Epson Stylus Pro 9600 with UltraChrome inks would do
the job. It'll do up to 44" and the US price (I assume you're in the US)
is about $5k.

As Tom says, the Epson posterboard is pricey but there are alternatives
and if colour isn't critical then you don't have to stick to Epson media.

If you wanted to go wider, then I'd suggest you looked at one of the
Rolands, such as the Soljet EX which comes in 54" & 64" models and can
print on uncoated media. The prices are quite a bit higher ($14k & $17k)
but they're far more durable than the Epsons. It doesn't sound like the
printer would be very heavily used, though.
