why Word 2007 does not allow me to modify older Word files?

I bought Word 2007, but I have not registered it yet. I realized today that
Word 2007 will open old files but will not allow me to edit or modify it.
Essentially I can only view the old Word files. Is this some sort of
embedded control because I have not registered my purchase yet? Or is there
something that was not set up right?

Registration is optional, but activation is mandatory if you want to use
Office 2007. If you don't activate your Office 2007 software, it will
go into "reduced functionality mode", which would seem to be what you
are experiencing. See
