Why won't Outlook allow "new" entries?

Outlook won't allow me to add new meetings or contacts. The "New" button is
completely grayed out and shortcut keys do not work. The product is
activated and not a trial version......
 
Double check it has been activated, and that it's not an old beta of Outlook
2003...
