why when I try to put a space in a word the next letter delets?

Press the Insert key once to toggle from Overtype to Insert mode.

There's a button on the keyboard labeled "Insert". You probably see "OVR"
at the bottom of your Word window. If so, hit the "Insert" key to turn this
off.

Press the Insert key or dbl-click the letters OVR that appear in the Status
Bar (bottom of document window) to get out of *Overtype* editing mode.
